Music in Motion is an auditioned choir consisting of fourth and fifth grade students from Allen Avenue, Ekstrand, Gladstone and Roynon Elementary Schools. Students rehearse weekly from January-May on Tuesdays from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. in the Ekstrand Elementary School Multipurpose Room. Parents must arrange for transportation to and from rehearsals. Students perform varied repertoire, drawing from contemporary and traditional choral literature, multicultural traditions, as well as from musical theatre and popular music.
Music in Motion singers focus on healthy vocal technique and demonstrate an evolving understanding of musicianship – i.e. music theory, sight-singing and performance skills. Students learn discipline, develop leadership skills, and proudly represent each of their respective elementary schools and Bonita Unified School District. Behavior and performance standards are set high for students in rehearsal and performances.
Singers are chosen on the basis of ability, musical knowledge, attendance, behavior and leadership skills exhibited in school chorus and in the classroom. Careful consideration is given to creating a well-balanced group. The selection process is ongoing in the fall during school chorus rehearsals and in classroom music time. Additional auditions are held during school chorus rehearsal time if needed. Because students are drawn from four different elementary schools, and the maximum size of the group cannot exceed 90 students, only a few students can be selected from each grade level at each school. Music in Motion member selections are made by early December.
Music in Motion reaches performance levels that qualify them to perform at such esteemed venues as La Verne’s Celebration of the Arts and Disneyland. Members must also participate in their own school chorus. Beginning Band students who wish to audition for Music in Motion will also have the opportunity to audition.
